The legacy of half a millennium in Pomerol, Château La Croix de Gay offers an exceptional wine with a unique style, forgotten but eminently Bordeaux, a combination of a singular terroir (an exception within the exception of Pomerol) combining gravels, clay and iron oxides, the most advanced oenology (Professor Axel Marchal) and the oldest wine-growing family in the appellation.
A wine that resonates with the sensibilities of tasters. The expression of a unique and exceptional terroir, enhanced with respect. Structured above all on taste, palatability and length on the palate, the wine of Château La Croix de Gay must be a pleasure to taste, capable of accompanying the most pleasant moments to enrich the memories that we retain.
Château La Croix de Gay is nestled in the heart of the hamlet of Pignon, the historic village of Pomerol in medieval times.
In this place rich in history, the attentive visitor will note the former presbytery, the sites of the cooperage workshop, the shoeing workshop, the communal well, the pediment bearing the date of the demolition of the Romanesque church and La Croix de Gay, the only historic monument in the appellation, a crossroads on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
From the medieval days of the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem to the modern era, the history of Château La Croix de Gay is linked to a single family. At the end of the 19th century, the wine was trading at a higher price than Pauillac’s 1855 Crus Classés, and the 1947 vintage surpassed the legendary Château Cheval-Blanc of the same year, according to Harry Waugh, the famous British critic.
Pomerol, the jewel of the Bordeaux wine region, lies on the right bank of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. A former commandery of the Hospitallers of Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem, this small vineyard with its fragmented plots is the result of the combination of a unique terroir of blue clay and gravel and the Merlot grape variety.
Pomerol offers wine-lovers exceptional wines that are profoundly original and rare, often even confidential on the scale of the Bordeaux wine-growing region.
Their character comes from the terroir,
Their quality comes from man,
Their personality comes from the elements.
Château La Croix de Gay is open to visitors. The owners offer group tastings by prior arrangement.
